Paint is a dispersion of pigments in resin, forming a homogeneous mixture. The resin used in paint has a long-chain structure that crosslinks with each other, resulting in the formation of a protective film. Depending on the type of paint, it can either dry physically or chemically, with some requiring external oxidation catalysts such as metal octoates.

Metal octoates, known as driers, are widely employed in the paint industry to accelerate the drying time of paint after it is applied to a substrate.
